Memorial Day Roots and Appreciation

Memorial Day was originally known at Decoration Day. The roots of this holiday go back to 1865 and the end of the Civil War. It was traditionally recognized on May 30. In 1882 the name was changed to Memorial Day, and in 1971, Congress change the date to the last Monday in May to provide for a three day holiday weekend.

The observance of Memorial Day is dedicated to service men and women who gave their lives for freedom and country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have passed away. Along with a day of remembrance, it is a time to share with family and friends. Memorial Day also marks the beginning of the gardening and summer seasons, although the official first day of summer is still a few weeks away.


This Memorial Day, I’d like to express my personal gratitude to all those who are or who have served and their families.  I hope everyone has a safe and memorable Memorial Day.
